Charlie Weis lands new gig in Kansas

Kansas finished the 2011 football season ranked 106th in total offense. Turner Gill was promptly dismissed as its head coach, after just two years in Lawrence.  The school was then burdened with the duty of finding a replacement, someone that could lift a program in a conference that scores in bunches. That fix came on Thursday, with the announcement that Charlie Weis was taking his offensive* talents to the Big 12.

3. repugnant to the moral sense, good taste, or the like; insulting: an offensive remark; an offensive joke.

The hire is puzzling, to say the least, and makes you wonder if Tyrone Willingham was included on the short list of candidates.  Weis made a name for himself in the NFL, but his college experience has been less than admirable.  With Florida falling well below offensive expectations under his care, the announcement of the new coach should simultaneously spring groans in Lawrence and cheers in the swamp.

With all the talent in Gainesville, Florida finished 102nd in total offense under the guidance of Charlie Weis.  He was 35-27 as the head coach of Notre Dame, which included leading the Irish to the worst season in the school’s illustrious football history (3-9). This was accomplished with high ranking recruiting classes in South Bend, which is something the Jayhawks will never see.

The numbers don’t lie, yet the hire is still made, leaving just one sensible reason behind it.  Of all candidates for the coaching vacancy, it was Weis’ physical dimensions that made him a perfect fit for the Adidas issued sideline gear Mark Mangino left behind.
