Corp’s unlucky break gives Barkley an opportunity

USC Preview Football
Watching a lineman roll into the left leg of Aaron Corp provided quite a morning scare.  Those fears increased on Tuesday, when the quarterback missed practice with soreness and swelling of the left knee.  Now on Wednesday, following the results of an MRI, we know the extent of the damage.

Tuesday’s X-rays showed no ligament damage, which was relieving to all of us.  But today’s MRI results concluded that USC’s named starter from spring practice has a cracked fibula that will keep him out of action for one to two weeks.

The bad news for Corp comes as good news for freshman Matt Barkley.  In a quarterback competition that showed separation by the narrowest of margins, Barkley now has the opportunity to take more snaps and familiarize himself with the timing of the first team unit.  Mitch Mustain, who appeared a distant third in the battle, can also make the most of the opportunity provided.

With Corp’s return date uncertain, Barkley becomes a probable starter for the opener against San Jose State. Didn’t we go through this a year ago with Mark Sanchez?
