Coaches rank USC third in preseason poll

A key to any championship run is early poll position. The closer you begin to the top is the less help you may need along the way. USC, now playing without restriction,  returned to the USA Today Coaches Poll on Thursday, after a postseason ban resulted in a two-year absence.

The Trojans will begin the 2012 season as the nation’s third ranked team, trailing 2011 BCS Championship game participants LSU and Alabama. USC received 19 first place votes, second only to the defending champion Crimson Tide.

The SEC placed seven teams in the top-25, followed by the Big 12 (6) and Big Ten (4). Oregon (No. 5) and Stanford ( No. 18) join USC as the only Pac 12 representatives to appear in the opening poll.

The Coaches poll is one of three elements to the BCS formula.  And based on the first publication, Southern California, though No. 3, will start the season in control of its own destiny. LSU will meet Alabama on November 3rd, opening an opportunity for advancement for those sitting below.

A team to watch is Oklahoma at No. 4, who is set to challenge USC’s push to the top. The computers show perennial love for the Big 12, and the Sooners will play six programs ranked in the Coaches Top-25, while the Trojans play only three.
