Rey Maualuga charged with misdemeanor assault
Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga was formally charged with misdemeanor assault for an incident occurring last weekend at a Cincinnati bar. According to reports, the former Trojan was involved in a Sunday morning altercation and allegedly punched a bar employee in the face. There is no mention of how long the linebacker was at the establishment or if he appeared to be intoxicated.
Maualuga was arrested for a driving under the influence in January of 2010, which led to to an NFL fine and a stint in rehab. Depending on the outcome of the most recent charges, he may face a similar fate, with the possible addition of a league suspension.
After receiving a first round projection in 2009, Maualuga fell to the Bengals in round two. It was speculated then that his fall was related to a 2006 incident involving alcohol and an arrest for battery, which caused some teams to pass over the All-American.
Maualuga is scheduled to be arraigned next week. The Bengals issued no comment.
