Top prospect decommits from USC

Pleasant Grove High School’s Arik Armstead has lifted his verbal commitment and reopened his recruiting options, according to a report by Scout.com.

The 6’7, 275 pound lineman is rated as the nation’s top recruit by Scout and 4th best at his position by Rivals.  He verbally committed to Lane Kiffin and the Trojans in June of last year.

Arik is the younger brother of current USC defensive lineman Armond Armstead, who is redshirting the 2011 season with an undisclosed illness, and still awaiting medical clearance to participate in team activities. It’s speculated that the delay in clearance, and the family’s resentment of the decision, may have factored into the severed relationship between the program and recruit.

USC will remain among the schools in consideration for the younger sibling, with Notre Dame, Michigan, Cal, Alabama, and Washington also on the list.
