Empire Picks week 10

Washington@ No. 1 Oregon

This one already had “blowout” written all over it.  But once the announcement came that Jake Locker’s injury will keep him on the sideline, things tilted more towards full scale embarrassment.  Chip Kelly’s starters should play no more than 2 1/2 quarters, as the Ducks cruise easily to victory.

Line: Oregon -35

Prediction: Oregon 58, Washington 9

Cal @ Washington State

By pattern, the Golden Bears should lose on the road in Pullman—and lose big. Cal has yet to win a game outside of Berkeley (0-4), and has scored just a single touchdown in each conference road contest.  Victory for the Cougars should be a lock, with Jeff Tedford losing quarterback Kevin Riley for the remainder of the season.  But before we start calling for an upset, let’s remember that this is Washington State.  Led by the rushing attack and Bears defense, Cal escapes by a narrow margin.

Line: Washington State +14

Prediction: Cal 23, Washington State 21

Oregon State @ UCLA

The third game on the list, and we have a third signal caller missing in action.  The Bruins’ pistol will be triggered by a new quarterback this week, but seeing that they didn’t pass very well with the old one, I can hardly call it a disadvantage.—Hell, it may be a blessing.

Line: UCLA +5

Prediction: Oregon State 29, UCLA 20

No. 15 Arizona @ No. 13 Stanford

In a game with Rose Bowl implications, Arizona will see quarterback Nick Foles return to action. Junior Matt Scott played well in his absence, so the better news may be that the Pac 10’s best unit against the run gets even stronger with the return of nose tackle Justin Washington.

Line: Stanford -8

Prediction: Stanford 30, Arizona 27

Arizona State @ USC

Both teams are in need of a boost in confidence, and if the Trojans aren’t completely deflated from last weeks loss, they should get it.

Line: USC -5

Prediction: USC 38, Arizona State 21

Upset Alerts

Maryland vs Miami– Canes are minus a starting QB and RB.

Hawaii vs No. 4 Boise State– More confident if this were on the Island.

Northwestern vs Penn State– Joe Pa waits another week for 400.

No. 8 Oklahoma vs Texas A&M– Stoops isn’t concerned about road struggles, but he should be.

Cam Newton vs NCAA– Good luck finding $200,000 in a church collection’s plate.
