Stafon Johnson down but not out

It was heartbreaking to watch Stafon Johnson carted from the field in his first NFL game.  As his eyes pooled with tears, it was an outpouring of emotion from a man challenged to the fullest in pursuit of his dream.

The Former USC tailback suffered a dislocated ankle and broken fibula, and underwent corrective surgery on Monday. By Tuesday, he was waived by the Titans.  It’s a setback that will temporarily hold him down, but both Johnson and Fisher agree that he’s not out.

The NFL is a business, and the release of Johnson cleared space for an able bodied person to fill a spot on the roster.  But Titans coach Jeff Fisher (known more recently as ‘The Kiffin-hater’) says the team will keep Stafon around, anticipating a return of the rookie in 8-9 weeks.  Johnson supported this on twitter, informing us all that we haven’t seen the last of him in a Titans uniform.

I’m still around and I am still a TITAN period see you guys baq on the field in the trainin room gettin right. Ice’n

This isn’t only a testament to Johnson’s will, it’s also a display of the admiration the Titans have for the undrafted rookie surrounded by question marks when he entered camp.  Physical prowess can make an instant impression, but it’s the character of a man that is long lasting.

Notes: Rey Maualuga received a two-game fine by the NFL for his offseason DUI arrest, but he will not be suspended.

Joe McKnight rushed for 32 yards in the Jets preseason opener.  He did a lot of dancing in the middle, just as Reggie Bush did when he first entered the league, and his new coaches will have to break him of that habit.

The competition remains wide open in Carolina, and Dwayne Jarrett will start for the Panthers in their second preseason game.  The Former Trojan All American has received some bad press, but it has apparently lit a fire beneath him.  Rookie Brandon LaFell started in the Panthers opener.

Mike Williams continues to be impressive in Seattle. The former first-rounder beat the Titans secondary for a 51-yard score on Sunday.—Ahh, memories.

Matt Leinart was efficient but not overly impressive (6 of 7 for 49 yards) in the Cardinals preseason opener.  But not to worry, because Derek Anderson doesn’t appear to be much of a challenger for the start.
