Raiders release Justin Fargas

The Raiders released Justin Fargas on Saturday, after a 7-year stay with the franchise. He signed a 3-year contract extension two years ago, which included $6 million in guarantees.

Fargas’ 3-year $12 million extension was granted just two months before the selection of Darren McFadden in the 2008 draft. The crowded backfield also included Michael Bush, who was selected in 2007. Over the past two seasons, it became more apparent that someone would eventually be the odd man out, and that man is the 30-year old former Trojan.

By releasing the running back on Saturday, Al Davis pockets a $1.7 million roster bonus that was due on Monday. Fargas had also been plagued by nagging injuries over the past two seasons, and Scout.com’s Adam Caplan cites a failed physical as the factor in this release.

Justin Fargas rushed for 491 yards last season, averaging 3.8 yards per carry.
