Chauncey Washington…Remember him?

The Jets officially announced the release of  Thomas Jones, which is effective on Friday. With the aging running back due a $3 million roster bonus, the move is hardly surprising and what most expected. Second-year player Shonn Greene now becomes the feature back in New York. And as for the man spelling him in relief, that may be our very own Chauncey Washington.

Washington was selected in the seventh round of the 2008 draft by Jack Del Rio and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He eventually made his way to New York, after a brief stay on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad. The Jets plucked him in December, and in an effort to fend off other bidders, will offer a second-round tender for services.

What’s the draw? Chauncey broke his leg a year ago, but that hasn’t kept anyone from showing interest in the power running back that also shocked observers with a time of 4.35 in the 40-yard dash at USC’s 2008 Pro-Day. As a Trojan, Washington missed two full seasons with eligibility issues. He was the team’s rushing leader in 2006-2007, averaging 5 yards per carry in his final season.
