Is Notre Dame packaging recruits?

It certainly isn’t uncommon for programs to package recruits to increase the odds of getting their main target to commit.  It’s a buddy system, where you look to gain an edge over other programs of interest by offering scholarships to good friends, hoping the less talented bait will lure the more talented star to your campus.

The practice was effective in Notre Dame nabbing Manti Te’o last February, as speculation arose that Charlie Weis sealed the commitment with the promise of a scholarship for his high school teammate. And when you look at the scholarships offered by the Irish for the current recruiting period, it would appear that Brian Kelly is willing to deliver those same packages.

Notre Dame is in pursuit of Cincinnati offensive lineman Matt James of St. Xavier High School. James is rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals, and his list is narrowed to the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish. Despite already having a stockpile of quarterbacks for the 2010 class, the Domers are also pursuing Luke Massa, James’ high school teammate.

Massa verbally committed to Brian Kelly 6 months ago, while he was head coach of Cincinnati. That commitment held steady, with few big time programs batting an eye in his direction, until he received an offer from Kelly’s new employer, Notre Dame. The quarterback will now be visiting the Irish this weekend, along with primary target Matt James.  The 2010 Notre Dame recruiting class could potentially show five quarterbacks, but one may never receive a snap under center.

Robbie Toma was used as commitment bait a year ago, first offered a scholarship by Rick Neuheisel to lure Te’o to UCLA, and then having the offer revoked, after his high school teammate chose the Irish.  A day later, Toma was offered, and accepted, a scholarship to Notre Dame.
