Peach State’s top prospect has L.A. interest
Mike Thornton has never tipped his hand and will not announce his college destination until February 3rd. The 6’2, 280 pounds defensive tackle has an ever-changing list of favorites, but Penn State and Georgia are the only official visits to date. Another visit may come soon, as another program has emerged. USC has scheduled an on campus visit for January 29th, and Thornton appears to be leaning towards acceptance.
The Stone Mountain product did not have Pete Carroll and USC on his radar, but expressed interest in Tennessee. It was Kiffin’s staff that went courting by helicopter, establishing a connection between the high-motored prospect and the Volunteers. That kiffin vessel has sailed west, and with the letters “U-S-C” now connected to him, interest has grown enough to add the program and its staff to a list of finalist.
The visit is set for January 29th, which is just four days before National Signing Day. Thornton canceled a visit to Auburn earlier this week, so nothing is set in Stone. But if there’s truth in his reference of Ed Orgeron as “one of the best D-line coaches there is”, he should be on campus next Friday.
