The ‘Shoe’ fit and USC wore it

Matt Barkley, USC, college football, Ohio State
As the old saying goes, “If the shoe fits, wear it”, which is exactly what Pete Carroll and his third ranked Trojans did.  USC took their road show to Columbus Ohio and the madness of the Horseshoe.  They filled their travel bag with a true freshman quarterback, a conservative game plan, and an inexperienced defense.  And once the contents were poured one by one on the field of Ohio Stadium, the visitors pulled the one remaing piece from their toted items, and that was victory.

No. 4 USC defeated No. 8 Ohio State 18-15 on Saturday night, in a game that hardly resembled other contests against Big 10 opponents.  This game, like others, was packed with big stars, but lacked big plays.  The teams combined for just 3 touchdowns, with none being of the electrifying west coast variety.  It was Big 10 smash-mouth football, and the Trojans of the Pac 10 beat the Buckeyes at their own game.

Young Matt Barkley slipped his foot inside the ‘shoe and onto the biggest stage of his young career.  Though he found it large, he also found comfort in a methodical offense that did more not to lose than to aggressively snatch the win.  Ohio State countered with the filling of running lanes and pressure up front, daring the first true freshman starting quarterback in Trojans’ history to beat them with his arm.  He was patient and poised, keeping his composure, and prepared to strike.

A young defense that spent months reading about the progression and dangers of Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor found no such person or threat on the field.  There was no caped superman that came to save the day.  There was no duplicate of Vince Young to provide new memories to haunt the empire  for a lifetime.  Jim Tressel provided and offense that did not allow Pryor to be Pryor, and we were served just another quarterback to add to a collection of the conquered.  A unit, minus 8 starters from a year ago, limited the Buckeyes to just a single touchdown through 4 quarters, and as a team,  Ohio State rushed for just 88 yards, including Pryor’s 36.

The storyline of this historic meeting will always be Matt Barkley and the game winning drive.  But lost in the mix is the emergence of Joe McKnight.  McKnight had 6 touches in that final possession, gobbling up 55 of the 86 yards necessary for victory.  He’s opened this 2009 season with the semblance of the player that was so heavily recruited out of Louisiana.  After battling injuries for two seasons, it appears that McKnight has finally arrived.

Jim Tressel suffered only his second loss at home to an out of conference opponent, in a span that covers 26 games.  His opportunity to end a personal drought against top ranked opponents, while also ending the Big 10’s misery against USC couldn’t have been greater.  He was at home, had momentum, and the lead.  But in the ‘shoe, the Trojans found comfort.  And in the end, not only did they wear it, they also owned it.

In the spirit of Troy, the Trojans show ‘no quit’ and will always fight on.
