Kenechi Udeze retires from football
Kenechi Udeze has announced his retirement, bringing a halt to one of the great comeback stories in professional sports. The Minnesota defensive end battled back from Leukemia, after leaving the Vikings in February of 2008. After a successful bone marrow transplant, using his brother as a donor, the former Trojan attempted an NFL return. That comeback is now shelfed, as his health takes priority over the game he’s always loved.
Udeze anchored the defensive line on USC’s 2003 national championship team. He was selected by the Vikings with the 20th overall pick in the 2004 draft, and tied for the team lead in sacks in his final season in Minnesota.
The mere thought of attempting a comeback was courageous, but not at all surprising. In the spirit of USC, it’s instinctive to “Fight On”.
