Shareece Wright missed the entire 2009 season with academic issues. With results of the recent grading period in, the USC cornerback is now eligible to participate in the postseason, and could be a factor in next weekend’s Nut Bowl.

Wright was the Trojans’ starting corner in 2008, played in just two games, before being sidelined with a hairline fracture in his neck and scrapping the remainder of the season with a medical redshirt. He was tagged to be a starter this year, becoming just one of the few defenders returning from a year ago, but was ruled academically ineligible in August.

The timing of his return coincides with a new vacancy in the secondary, after Josh Pinkard’s season and time at Southern California recently ended with a torn ACL suffered in the season finale. Pinkard is scratched from the Emerald Bowl roster, and with this being his third such injury as a Trojan, his draft stock is likely to suffer.

On December 26th, the men of Troy will attempt to salvage the season with a victory over an average program. And though the current season for USC is average in itself, the opponent arrives with a different view of the circumstances. The Eagles come to us with one glorified mission, which isn’t to defeat a spiraling team in a lesser bowl—It is to conquer college football’s most heralded coach and his ‘program of he decade’.

It wasn’t long ago that USC was the Associated Press lovechild. It was December of 2003 that saw the Trojans rise to a No. 1 ranking in their poll, a position they held for 33 consecutive weeks before faltering to the Longhorns in the 2006 Rose Bowl. During this time, America’s writers couldn’t get enough of Pete Carroll’s group. They captured a couple of Heisman Trophies, were well represented on All-America teams, and were even award a National title, when the other crowning organization locked them out.

As USC now prepares for an appearance in the Nut Bowl, this one time lovechild has become the black sheep of college football writers. The Trojans were absent among the nation’s top-25 in the end of season AP poll. And now, adding insult to injury, they’ve been completely shutout of Associated Press first-team All-American honors. USC was also blanked by Sports Illustrated, but did manage to have one player, Charles Brown, listed among the Sporting News first-teamers. Of course, we’ve seen this kind of desertion before. There’s a group of folks down in Tallahassee welcoming us to their world.

In 2007, a preseason Sports Illustrated cover featured running backs Emmanuel Moody, Chauncey Washington, and C.J. Gable. The issue wasn’t wide enough for the additions of Stafon Johnson, Joe McKnight, Broderick Green, Allen Bradford, and Marc Tyler. It was the deepest unit in the country, and has remained that way for years. At the time of that publication, questions arose over Pete Carroll’s ability to keep so many runners happy with just one football. Looking back now, he didn’t. Moody transferred out of the program and into Florida. Broderick Green is now featured by the Arkansas Razorbacks. And as for Gable, he went from cover boy to the coach’s doghouse.

Here we are, bidding farewell to 2009. Chauncey Washington has long graduated, and with the exception of Stafon Johnson, there isn’t another Trojan running back with eligibility run dry. And even so, Johnson still has the medical redshirt option at his disposal. A crowded backfield from 2007 remains the same today. And as every December brings a look ahead, it’s time to sift through USC’s horses to get a glimpse of 2010.

I've been bombarded with inquiries of Stafon Johnson and his potential leap into April's NFL draft. The root of those questions stem from an NFL.com blog that made it appear that the senior running back's decision had been set in stone. The blog, written by Steve Wyche, was based on statements made by one of Johnson's uncles, and is incorrect.
