Devon Kennard tears pectoral muscle
USC may have suffered its first major blow of the summer. According to a report by ESPN’s Pedro Mora, defensive end Devon Kennard suffered a pectoral muscle tear while lifting weights and may be sidelined for the entire 2012 season.
At this time, the severity of the injury is unknown, but the senior is scheduled for surgery next week.
Kennard was the most experienced player on the defensive line, and his absence is a major blow to a unit lacking depth. The Trojans recently lost Nick Perry to the NFL draft, leaving Kennard as a key component to any championship run.
Leonard Williams, Kevin Greene, and Greg Townsend Jr. will now compete for the vacant spot on the outside, with neither having much experience.
We’ll follow this story as it develops, with hopes that the earliest reports are exaggerated and #42 will get back on the field soon.
