Two birds, one stone for the NCAA probe and USC

The ongoing NCAA investigation involving allegations of Reggie Bush receiving improper benefits while attending USC has now merged to include the more recent allegations against O.J. Mayo and the Southern California basketball program.

The Bush allegations were sparked 3 years ago, surfacing just before the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner was selected as the second overall pick in the 2006 draft by the New Orleans Saints. It branched into a civil suit, with accuser Lloyd Lake demanding repayment of money owed by the Bush family on a promise, but the dragged out court battle still has no conclusion.

The Mayo investigation is fairly fresh. It was only a year ago that Louis Johnson, a seemingly disgruntled employee of a California based sports agency, made claims that Mayo had received more than $200,000 in money and gifts from Rodney Guillory, another employee. Johnson’s attorneys are the source to the information that the two investigations have merged.

If the university is found to be at fault, lacking institutional control, they could face NCAA penalties and disciplinary action. The football program stands to lose the most, with the possibility of vacating victories, which would strip Pac 10 championships and possibly the 2004 National title.
